As a teenager I dreamed about exploring Africa in my own 4x4 vehicle. A couple of years later I bought a Landrover, saved the money, found the right travel companion (my girlfriend), quit our houses, jobs and left. With only a few maps and loney planets we entered Africa realizing we didn't know anything about the continent or the route to take.

Eight months later we where looking at a long orange line (see image) on our Michelin maps. We where in South Africa looking back at the most beautiful, terrible, exiting, depressing, relaxing and toughest experience of our lives. We felt like we could conquer the world.

We flew home to make some money again and left the car at friends in Jo'burg. We decide what to do with it later.

A few months later I still couldn't get used to my normal live in The Netherlands. It was getting winter and I definitely wanted to go back to Africa.

Our Canadian friend Richard, who we met in Morocco, visited us while he was still traveling. At 3.00am we had the map of Africa spread in front of us, surrounded with bottles of gin. Our vision was getting a bit blurry. We knew that the 'real' adventure lay further west in Angola, DRC and The Congo. Stories of water holes that can swallow a vehicle, aggressive police demanding excessive bribes and rebels fighting vicious guerrilla wars intrigued us. This is what we are going to do, the 'Non' touristic route!

That night resulted in an other (red) line on our maps, 29 african countries and 61.000 km in total, numerous flat tires and a near dead experience but we've seen some of the most exciting and beautiful countries on the continent!
